Pool Fence Scottsdale AZ: What Local Homeowners Need to Know

·By Michael Leifer

Scottsdale is one of the most pool-dense cities in Maricopa County. With a climate that supports year-round pool use and a strong luxury home market, pools are a standard feature across neighborhoods from McCormick Ranch to Troon North. So is the need for compliant pool fencing.

Here is what Scottsdale homeowners specifically need to know before installing a pool fence.

Arizona Pool Barrier Law Applies in Scottsdale

Arizona Revised Statutes § 36-1681 sets the statewide pool barrier requirement: a minimum 5-foot barrier (with self-closing, self-latching gates) that completely separates the pool from the home and yard. This applies in every Scottsdale zip code, in every neighborhood, regardless of HOA status.

Scottsdale code enforcement actively issues citations for non-compliant pool barriers. The civil penalty is up to $2,500 per violation. More importantly, operating a pool without a compliant barrier in Scottsdale creates significant liability exposure — particularly in neighborhoods where children visit frequently.

HOA Considerations in Scottsdale

Scottsdale has one of the highest HOA participation rates in Arizona. Many master-planned communities — including those in North Scottsdale, Desert Ridge, and Gainey Ranch — have specific architectural guidelines that govern backyard structures, including pool barriers.

Common HOA restrictions that affect pool fencing in Scottsdale:

  • Material requirements: Some HOAs specify that backyard fencing must use approved materials. Removable mesh fencing is typically classified as a non-permanent structure, which means it often passes HOA review without the full architectural approval process required for permanent fencing.
  • Visibility restrictions: HOAs near golf courses or with strict neighbor-line setbacks sometimes limit what is visible from adjacent properties. Removable mesh is nearly invisible from a distance, which typically satisfies these requirements.
  • Color requirements: Some HOAs specify color palettes for backyard elements. We offer Black, Brown, Beige, and Gray mesh — one of which typically matches the HOA's requirements.

Before installation, verify your CC&Rs. We can provide written documentation of our fence specifications to support any HOA architectural review submission.

North Scottsdale vs. South Scottsdale: Different Neighborhoods, Same Law

Clear Choice installs pool fences throughout all of Scottsdale — from the older neighborhoods near Old Town to the newer master-planned communities in North Scottsdale near the 101. Deck materials vary widely across these neighborhoods: travertine and natural stone are common in luxury properties; standard concrete and cool deck are more common in mid-century neighborhoods closer to Central Scottsdale.

Our four color options (Black, Brown, Beige, and Gray) are chosen specifically to blend with Arizona's most common deck materials. Michael can recommend the right color for your specific property when you book.
