Installation
·4 min readHow to Measure Your Pool Fence Perimeter (Before You Get an Estimate)
The most common question we get before a pool fence estimate is: "How do I know how much fence I need?"
The answer depends on your pool layout and how you plan to measure. Here are two approaches — one manual, one faster.
Method 1: Measure Manually With a Tape Measure
A physical measurement gives you an accurate perimeter count. Here is how to do it correctly:
Step 1: Decide where the fence line goes. The fence does not follow the edge of the pool — it runs around the perimeter of the pool deck, at whatever distance from the water's edge you want the barrier to be. Most installations run the fence 1 to 3 feet from the pool edge. Decide this first, because it affects your total footage significantly.
Step 2: Measure each straight segment. Walk each side of the planned fence line with a tape measure and record the footage. For a standard rectangular pool, you will have four measurements — but most Arizona pools have irregular shapes, step cutouts, spa overflows, and obstacles that create additional segments.
Step 3: Account for gate openings. Each gate is typically 4 feet wide. A standard installation includes one gate for access from the house to the pool area. If you want a second gate — for a side yard entrance or equipment access — add another 4 feet and note it separately, because gates are priced individually ($475 for a 4ft gate, $525 for a 5ft gate).
Step 4: Add up the total. Sum your segment measurements and subtract the gate openings. The result is your linear footage of mesh. Multiply by your price per foot (~$25 for 4ft, ~$27 for 5ft) and add gate costs to get a rough estimate.
For example: a 100-foot perimeter with one 4ft gate = 96 feet of mesh + one gate. At $25/ft, that is $2,400 in mesh + $475 gate = $2,875. Our minimum is $1,350 — so for very small pools, the minimum applies.
Method 2: Use Our Aerial Estimator (Faster and More Accurate)
Our online estimator uses high-resolution satellite imagery of your specific property. You enter your address, and the estimator loads an aerial view of your pool. You trace the fence line directly on the map, mark gate locations, select your fence height and color — and get an instant real price.
This method is more accurate than manual measurement for most homeowners because:
- You can see your pool's actual shape from above, including irregular contours that are easy to underestimate at ground level
- You do not need to physically walk the perimeter with a tape measure
- The satellite view helps you plan gate placement before you commit to anything
- The price is calculated automatically — no math required
The aerial estimator takes about two minutes. The price you get is the actual installed price, not a range to be negotiated later.
What Michael Confirms Before Installation
After you submit your booking, Michael reviews your aerial trace and calls to confirm. If your pool has features that are hard to trace from satellite — underground equipment vaults, unusual deck configurations, or access constraints — he catches those in the call and adjusts if needed. By installation day, the scope is confirmed and there are no surprises.
