What Color Pool Fence Should You Choose? An Arizona Homeowner's Guide

·By Michael Leifer

When homeowners call to schedule a pool fence installation, color is almost always the last question they think about — and then it becomes the one they spend the most time on. It matters more than you might expect, because a pool fence is visible every time you look out your back window.

Clear Choice Pool Fence offers four UV-stabilized mesh colors: Black, Brown, Beige, and Gray. Here is an honest breakdown of how each one performs in Arizona's outdoor environment and how to match it to your specific backyard.

Black: The Default for a Reason

Black is by far the most popular color we install, and there is a clear reason for it: black mesh nearly disappears against pool water. When you are standing in your house looking out at the pool, a black fence reads as a subtle visual boundary rather than a barrier. The mesh weave, viewed at any distance, blends into the blue-green of the water behind it.

Black also pairs well with virtually every Arizona deck material — travertine, pavers, cool deck, concrete, flagstone. It does not clash with warm tones or cool tones. If you are unsure which color to choose, black is the safe choice that almost never disappoints.

One practical note: black does absorb heat. On a 115-degree Phoenix day, the mesh surface will be hot to the touch. This is not a structural concern — UV-stabilized black mesh is tested for heat resistance — but it is worth being aware of if young children regularly put their hands on the fence.

Brown: Best for Warm Natural Decks

Brown is the second most popular choice, and it shines on properties with natural travertine, earth-toned pavers, or warm-colored concrete decking. If your deck reads as sand, tan, or terracotta, a brown fence will blend in far better than black would contrast.

Brown mesh also tends to look good against natural landscaping — desert plants, boulders, and wood fencing. If your backyard has a warm, organic palette, brown is worth strongly considering.

One thing to watch: brown is more visible at a distance than black because it does not blend into pool water the way black does. But on the right property, it looks intentional and integrated rather than installed.

Beige: For Light Concrete and Kool Deck

Beige is the right call for light-colored surfaces — white or off-white concrete, light gray Kool Deck, sand-colored plaster. On these backgrounds, black would create a high-contrast line that draws the eye. Beige softens that contrast significantly.

Beige is less common than black or brown, but on the right property it is clearly the superior visual choice. If your deck is on the lighter end of the spectrum, compare beige seriously before defaulting to black.

Gray: The Modern Choice

Gray has grown in popularity as contemporary Arizona homes have adopted charcoal pavers, polished concrete, and modern architectural finishes. If your home has a cool, modern palette — gray stone, concrete, white walls — gray mesh can look deliberately designed rather than incidentally installed.

Gray pairs especially well with dark gray or charcoal pavers that are common in newer Phoenix-area construction. It also works with Saltillo tile where neither brown nor beige would be quite right.

Does Color Affect Durability?

With professional-grade UV-stabilized mesh — which is what Clear Choice installs — all four colors are rated for Arizona's high-UV environment. The UV inhibitors are incorporated into the mesh polymer during manufacturing, not applied as a surface coating. This means the color protection is built in, not something that will wash off or fade quickly.

Budget mesh from overseas manufacturers often uses inferior pigments that fade dramatically within two to three Arizona summers, turning from rich black to a muddy purple or washed-out gray. This is one of the clearest signs you are looking at a low-quality product. Our mesh holds its color for the life of the fence.

How to Choose

The fastest way to decide: take a photo of your pool deck from the house looking out. Look at the dominant color. Then ask: which fence color would I least notice against this background? That is usually your answer.

When you use our online estimator, you will select your color preference during the estimate process. You can also call Michael to talk through options based on your specific deck material — he has installed all four colors on every deck type in Maricopa County and can give you a direct recommendation.
